A couple of reasons we celebrate the 4th- Sullivan & Merritt- their last letters home:

Neither of these men made it back to their homes and families, nor did so many others over so many years. The Revolution won our freedom, but every war since then has maintained it. So, this weekend, while we are all cooking out, enjoying an extra day off and are able to be with family and friends, remember the ones who sacrificed it all.
These letters are in a book by Frank Crawford. He researched 21 of these men who never made it home and the book includes their final words to their loved ones and a bio of the men, including the battles they were in and where they were buried. The book is one of the best I have read, and it makes you think that every soldier's grave had a face, a life and someone waiting for them to come home.
Copies of the book are available and if you are interested in one, email me at tetedennis@yahoo.com and I will put you in touch with Frank.
