I've done some research on these- and if anyone knows anything different, please correct me.
In 1866- they began printing National Bank Notes- these are examples of those. They were printed by the federal government instead by the banks themselves.
Due to "panics", much like the one that caused the Great Depression, congress passed the 1913 Federal Reserve Act- which stated that only the Federal Reserve could print and issue notes. This act let the government control 99% of all currency.
National Bank Notes replaced Bank State Notes that were printed by whatever bank that issued them. They began in 1836 and ended with the National Bank Notes.
I am not an expert on this at all- so check it out. I just read a lot.
